This year has certainly been a difficult and trying one for all of us. Many of us have lost friends and family to COVID and my heart goes out to you all.  We have done our best to navigate this golf season with the health and safety of our members, guests and staff as our number one priority. Golf was indeed one of the bright spots, allowing us the opportunity to get outside and safely socialize. These were key factors in the upsurge in rounds played.  We saw a large increase in outside play this year that bodes well for the future of BCC.

The weather…..while this was a definite challenge for Jesse and his crew, dealing with limited water supply from our wells and ponds in drought conditions, there was not a day that we did not have people out golfing.
While there were many positives from this past golf season, we continue to operate with a very lean budget that has us looking at ways to contain costs while continuing to improve the quality of the golf course.  We do most of the work in house rather than hiring outside contractors but the reality is that there is a laundry list of capitol improvement projects that I inherited with the golf course that continues to grow.   These projects all come with price tags ranging in the 5 to 6 figure range and we will continue to work through them as time and money allow.   We have begun work on the bunkers, but with over 100 on the course, this will be a multi-year project.

As I mentioned earlier, we had a big uptick in outside play this year. Membership dues make up around 30% of the operating budget, so it is necessary to grow this segment even more.  We lost 80% of our tournament business this year due to COVID concerns. We are getting closer to our goal of making the BCC a self-sustaining business but we are not there yet.  We have held off on raising rates for as long as we can but, as we told you last year, there is an increase going into effect for 2021. The rates and forms are attached to this email and for your convenience, we have included the cost of the 7% sales tax and handicap fee.  We are giving the option for an early pay date with a discount.  We do this because we have many expenses that carry through the entire year including property taxes and payroll for our salaried employees.  We are also offering a 4 payment plan on the 2021 rate. The best way for you to help is to encourage your friends and coworkers to golf locally. If you work at one of the larger businesses in town, we have a great corporate offer that allows employees to join at a much lower rate. Please talk to Mike Z if you would like more information. We also have gift cards to help with your Christmas shopping needs. We brought in a line of baby and children’s golf attire this year too!

I am blessed to have an incredible staff at BCC. Mike Z is a wonderful representative for the club in the pro shop. His positive attitude during this incredibly trying year continues to improve the overall golf experience. Jesse and his staff have done an excellent job addressing issues on the course. Kara is attending turf school this year and she will be back in the spring to assist Jesse on the course.

I am happy to announce that our superintendent Jesse and his wife Meghan welcomed their daughter Penelope Eve Sutton into this world on November 21, 2020.  We wish them all the best as they adjust to this new addition!!

In closing, I want to thank you all for your support at BCC.  Many of you have been members here for decades and your kind words mean so much. Unfortunately, we will not be able to have an end of the year party as we have the past 2 years. This was a great way for me to touch base with many of you that I don’t see on a regular basis. Please email me if you have thoughts or ideas for growing the game of golf at BCC.
